Shri Ramaṇa Vibhakti Ashṭakaṃ –

Daivarata

(This beautiful Stotra on Ramana Maharishi has all the vibhaktis (declensions of nouns) of Samskrit grammar, from the first to the eighth in the same order in each stanza. Daivarata was a Vedic scholar, a disciple of Ramana Maharishi – Editor)

Lo! Beheld here is the wonderful Sage Ramana, the glorious, verily Parasara himself, pure, mountain-dwelling son of Parvati, with gaze turned inwards, Deva-like, free from the fear of Samsara, ever serene, merged solely in Atman alone, supreme treasure of virtues, in Mudra of silence, with mind content and happy, with the face reflecting the same, the very source of Sat-Chit-Ananda. (1)

He, upon beholding whom, nothing more remains to be done; by the serene grace of his mind, the whole web of mental resolves dissolves; the many modes of mind arising from aversion or restraint quieten down; that saint, that Guru Ramana, the ascetic of Parasara’s line; on him I meditate always. (2)

He, by whom this wondrous creation is clearly observed by the mind like a dream, as though appearing without; he, whose gaze, though turned inward, pours forth as compassion, dispelling the fears of those who worship him; owing to renouncing of attachment, when all resultant selfish thoughts have been completely cast aside, then that mortal, protected by Bhagavan Ramana, attains bliss instantly. (3)

He, who holds the staff of Truth, knower of the Supreme State, awakens beings to the knowledge of Atma, the bestower of bliss of one’s own Atma, and protects beings from the fear of birth and death. People, who take refuge in him, intensely seeking one’s own Atma with a clear intellect, attain supreme fulfilment. Salutations to that Bhagavan Ramana, the descendant of Parasara, the form of Om, the bestower of Jnana. (4)

He is desireless, all-fulfilled, pure, untouched by the taint of Kali; his speech, his being, his very body divine, shine ever with radiant splendour; he is steadfast in Self-Knowledge through austerity; for the beings, tormented by the serpents of sense-attractions, there is, in truth, no other refuge whatsoever; from that sage, descendant of Parasara, the great Muni Ramana, may Atma-Jnana become mine. (5)

He, whose sense of I and Mine has melted away, of itself, and Pure Consciousness alone remains; for whom, the universe of dharma and adharma, together with their do’s and don’ts, has been tranquilised; for whom, the desirable and the undesirable are the same, yet who abides in the world for the welfare of all beings; to the twin feet of that Bhagavan Ramana, the supreme refuge, I surrender. (6)

In him, who stands beyond all asramas, who has attained fearlessness, is free from the universe of varna, established in Brahman, ever content, the very treasure of supreme bliss; to whom, the eight Siddhis prostrate; in whom, the supreme abode of bliss, desires themselves enter and find fulfilment always; in that great Muni Ramana, the descendant of Parasara, may my intellect and sense organs revel. (7)

O Master, Remover of all distress, Supreme Guru, the very form of pure Jnana, lead me. By your grace, the grace of the descendant of Vasishtha, having got hold of your twin feet, so difficult for all to attain, this Daivarata, has taken refuge in you, realising with the sense of fulfilment, having mind fixed upon you, that here indeed, all desires are completely quietened; save me from the snare of sin (of delusion of Atma and Anatma), O great Muni Ramana. (8)

Upon that Ramana, in whom Consciousness has alluringly blossomed; the refuge, the memorable play of Reality, the Supreme, the teacher of Supreme Truth, the awakener from the stranglehold of ignorance, I meditate.
