Kanchipuram, famous centre of learning, is one among the 7 mokshapuris. With the noble intention of establishing an educational institution in Kanchipuram, that imparts knowledge encompassing culture, devotion, service and enlightenment of the self, our Acharya Shri Shri Jayendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya Mahaswamigal, started this University to commemorate the Centenary Year (1993) celebrations of Walking God, Shri Shri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Shankaracharya Mahaswamigal. The University was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Shri.P.V.Narasimha Rao and Shri.Arjun Singh, MHRD Minister. The University is in the service of imparting knowledge in varied fields of study to students belonging to different states. Today marks the occasion of the 28th Convocation of the University.
Dr.T.G.Sitharam, Chairman AICTE, has come here exclusively to grace the occasion as the Chief Guest. He hails from Karnataka, studied there and served in Indian Institute of Sciences, Bengaluru and in many other places. Based on his extensive service to the educational development of the North Eastern part of our country, he has been entrusted with the leadership of the highest office of regulatory body of technical education in India – AICTE.
Foundation is very important for a building as well as for Culture. Our Indian culture and Indian way of life, has as its strong foundation, the path lived and shown by the incarnation, Lord Rama. The innumerable values exhibited by Him like humanity, justice, sense of duty, respect to parents, compassion, respect to all, service, humility, patience, simplicity, kindness, trust, discernment and wisdom are the basis of India’s culture. Lord Rama showed by his actions that service is supreme to power. Although, he was the epitome of bravery, he was equally humble and simple. He used his bravery and power only when needed and that too for the goodness of humanity. Due to his exemplary nature, disposition and exceptional nature, everyone starting from sages to ordinary people were attracted to Him. This lifestyle and characteristics of Rama are the basic strong foundation of Indian culture, tradition and way of life.
As a manifestation of the glory of Lord Rama and as a symbolism to our culture, after around 500 years of great efforts, the construction of the Ram Janmabhoomi Teertha Kshetram at Ayodhya has commenced. When I visited Ayodhya the Trustees of the temple informed that Prof.Sitharam, from IIT had advised that the foundation must be strong and must be laid in a scientific manner, to withstand any condition, including earthquakes. Based on his advice, the foundation was laid and then the construction of the temple was started. Later on the Bala Ram idol was enshrined and now the 1st anniversary has also been celebrated. Prof.Sitharam has played a pivotal role in laying the foundation of this temple. The construction is still ongoing. Different people study different aspects of nature like energy, water, space and air. Prof. Sitharam’s core subjects of studies and research deal with the properties of sand, stones, earth, etc. all connected with “Prithvi” aspect of nature. The notable aspect is that Prof. Sitharam is in Kancheepuram – Ekamreshwara Kshetram which is the Prithvi Linga Kshetram.
Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and Prof. S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, Vice Chancellor, SASTRA Deemed to be University, Thanjavur, who are present here have been instrumental in the visit of Prof.Sitharam for today’s function.
This University must grow and be instrumental in the growth of patriotism and devotion, like the ancient universities of Nalanda and Takshashila. The University must strive to restore the glory of Kancheepuram – as a great seat of learning. Rooted in tradition, the University must cater to the modern educational needs facilitating good placements, research, security, culture and history, foreign relations, etc.
Education is not merely a means to secure employment but a sacred endeavor to cultivate wisdom, character, and service to society. In the modern world, many believe that science and technological advancements are gifts from the West. However, our ancient Indian scriptures show profound knowledge in mathematics, geography, chemistry, Ayurveda, Vastu Shastra, Neeti Shastra, public administration, finance, and charity. These disciplines were not just about acquiring skills but were deeply intertwined with the principles of Dharma and holistic personal development.
In ancient India, the foundation of learning was based on character and virtue. True progress is not merely economic growth but the overall well-being of an individual, which includes mental health, social responsibility, and the ability to adapt and contribute to society. This is what we call inclusive growth—an approach where education develops not only in intellectual excellence but also in moral and spiritual values.
We must strive to rebuild Bharatiya Samajam, a society rooted in our timeless traditions, values, and knowledge systems. There is no need to look to the West for higher education when we have the ability to provide world-class education within our own country at an affordable cost. It is our responsibility to work tirelessly towards this goal, ensuring that education remains accessible to all and remains a beacon of our cultural and intellectual heritage.
This university, named after the Walking God, Maha Periyava, has been a lighthouse of knowledge and service. It upholds the true essence of education by integrating academics with devotion and national spirit. By fostering Bharatiya Vijnanam (Indian Knowledge), Aadhunika Vijnanam (Scientific Knowledge), and Adhyatmika Vijnanam (Spiritual Knowledge), we create well-rounded individuals who will lead the nation towards prosperity and righteousness.
The future of our society depends on the leaders we develop today. Our graduates must not only excel in their respective fields but also embody selflessness, integrity, and dedication to serve society. True leadership is about placing the welfare of others above oneself and working for the collective good. We need leaders who are both spiritually enriched and scientifically knowledgeable, so that they can contribute meaningfully to the nation’s growth.
At SCSVMV University, we offer degrees in various disciplines, including Arts, Science, Engineering, Finance, Management, and Ayurveda. But beyond degrees, we emphasize values and ethical conduct. To further our commitment in preserving our heritage, we must engage in extensive research, digitalizing and publishing our invaluable ancient manuscripts with the help of scholars. These texts hold the wisdom of our ancestors and must be preserved for the enlightenment of future generations.
Our duty as an institution and as individuals is to seek truth, cultivate positive thoughts, and engage in righteous deeds. In life, faith, hard work, courage, and service to society are the pillars that lead to true success. Let us all work together to elevate the pride of Kanchi, a city that has been a center of wisdom and enlightenment for centuries. May the blessings of Maha Periyava guide each of you in your journey ahead, and may you always uphold the values of knowledge, service, and righteousness in all that you do.
With divine blessings, I congratulate each of you and pray for your success in both your professional and spiritual endeavors.
Jaya Jaya Shankara, Hara Hara Shankara!
